ARTICLES AND DETERMINERS
Determiners
The words which are used before noun to fix or define the noun in some way or the other are called determiners.
Articles
A , an and the are called articles.
A and an are called indefinite articles while the is called a definite article.
An articles is used before a countable singular noun ; as
A hen laid an egg.
The baby is playing in the garden.
An elephant killed a boy.
A or An
The choice between A or An is determined by sound. A is used before words beginning with a consonant sound. These include:
(a) Consonants with consonant sound: A boy,
a dog, a pen, a horse, a B. A., a human being, a yard, a year etc.
(b) Vowels with a consonant sound:
(i) Words which begin with a y sound; as, a ewe, a unit, a university , a union, a European , a uniform , a eulogy , a useful thing etc.
